Bike theft is a problem in most cities, whether it’s opportunist or organized gangs. In the United States, a bike is STOLEN EVERY 30 SECONDS according to a study carried out by 529 Garage, read that again! Every 30 seconds! That’s crazy! As well as being seriously inconvenient and upsetting, replacing a bike isn’t easy or affordable, so what can you do to protect your bike, wherever you live?
LOCK YOUR BIKE
Locking your bike properly is important. Whether you are grabbing a quick coffee, getting some groceries from the supermarket, or locking your bike on the back of your car. Thieves are looking for a quick and easy theft and will pick the bike that is easiest to steal.
There are different locks available, the most secure locks are the bulkiest and heaviest. This is simply because a thicker lock takes longer to bust open or cut apart. There are also locks available with an alarm, these locks have a shock and cut alarm, and will give a loud alarm when cut or tampered with.
- Invest in a good bike lock.
- Lock your bike through the frame and onto a fixed point that cannot be lifted.
(like a metal fence, handrails, trees, streetlights, and a concrete post) - Try to park your bike in a busy public well-lite location.
- If your battery is not locked on the frame, consider taking your battery out.
529 GARAGE
For an additional layer of protection, we recommend registering your bike with 529 Garage. This is the world's largest community-powered bike recovery service. You simply download the app, register your bike and enter the serial number, further important details and pictures of your bike.
If your bike goes missing, you can send an alert to all 529 users, but also to registered agencies like bike shops, the police etc. This will increase the chance of recovering your bike.
You can also shield your bike with the tamper-resistant 529 shield. This will warn thieves that your bike is secured with 529 Garage, plus it will also make it easier to find your bike if your bike is recovered.
BOSCH ALARM AND CONNECT MODULE
The Bosch E-bike alarm is available for Bosch E-bikes with the Smart system and requires the ConnectModule. This is a physical component that can be purchased in-store and needs to be installed by a certified Bosch E-bike mechanic. This all works together with the Bosch Flow app.
The ConnectModule works with motion sensors, a radio and a GPS on its own battery. The sensors can identify the movement of the E-bike and trigger a local alarm.
